Farmer nearly triples income thanks to Kapuso Foundation bridge project

A farmer from Misamis Oriental has tripled her income thanks to the bridge project by the GMA Kapuso Foundation.

According to a report on "24 Oras," residents of the municipality of Naawan previously had a wooden bridge hanging over a river for around 10 years.

Whenever the water would rise, however, many were unable to cross and this affected their livelihoods.

"When it gets flooded and we can't cross, we can't bring bananas to the market so they get wasted. We just feed them to the pigs," Herculine Seriño, a farmer, in Filipino.

In addition, the old bridge was prone to accidents and one child nearly fell to the river after losing her footing on the rotting surface.

To help the residents, the Kapuso Foundation partnered with the Rotary Club of Araneta, Quezon City to build a metal bridge in place of the old one.

The new bridge, which connects the municipality of Naawan and Manticao, was turned over in 2019.

Since then, Herculine nearly tripled her weekly income from selling bananas. The P450 she used to earn now increased to P1,200.

"Our products will no longer get wasted," she said.

The Kapuso Foundation is still accepting donations for its Kapuso Tulay Para Sa Kaunlaran Project in Dingalan, Aurora Province this year.

You may donate through bank deposits, Cebuana Lhuiller, and Pay Maya. Vouchers can also be bought from Shopee and Zalora.
