Family rescued from capsized boat off Loay, Bohol

TAGBILARAN CITY - A family of three was rescued off Loay town in Bohol Monday morning after their boat flipped over due to big waves caused by Tropical Depression Lannie.

The incident happened at the seawaters between Pamilacan Island and Loay town around 10 a.m. when the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) - Loay substation received the information.

In a Facebook post, Loay Mayor Hilario Ayuban Jr. said Efren Sera, his wife and daughter went fishing when large waves and strong winds overturned their boat.

Bohol was placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 on Monday after a low pressure area intensified into Tropical Depression Lannie that brought heavy rains and floods some parts of the province.

Sera was able to send a text to his cousin who reported the incident to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Sub Station Loay.

Since the Coastguard's vehicle could not withstand the strong winds, they enlisted the help of the Maria Rita Fishing Vessel to rescue the family.

They rescued the Sera family after spending some time in the rough water amid the strong waves and wind condition prevailing in the area.

The family's boat was eventually towed back to Loay port by the responding authorities.

Meanwhile, two fishermen were also rescued by PCG-Western Bohol in the waters off Abatan River in Cortes town. -- BAP, GMA News
