Several coastal areas in Visayas and Mindanao were found positive for paralytic shellfish poison or toxic red tide that exceeds regulatory limit, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) announced on Friday.

In its latest bulletin, the BFAR said all types of shellfish and alamang (krill) gathered from the following coastal areas are not safe from human consumption:

  • coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol
  • Carigara Bay and coastal waters of Leyte
  • Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar
  • Villareal, Cambatutay, and San Pedro Bay in Western Samar
  • Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur
  • Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur.

Meanwhile, the BFAR said fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption, “provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.”—Richa Noriega/AOL, GMA News
