We keep coming back to Manila: A ‘Biyahe ni Drew’ itinerary



For the past weeks, “Biyahe ni Drew” has been taking viewers abroad to experience the culture of other countries. Now, it is time to get back to exploring our country’s very own gems!
 
Metro Manila, apart from its busy roads and congested shopping malls, is home to unique places that will make you have an all-around cultural adventure. Good food, heart-pumping extreme activities, historical sites, you name it! No need for passports because these places are close to home. 

Where to stay:
 
White Knight Hotel
Plaza San Luis Complex, Urdaneta St., Intramuros, Manila
 
Metro Manila is filled with hotels that you can choose from if you have relatives visiting from abroad. But if they want a historical feel, they can try the White Knight Hotel which was actually the residence of a Spanish general before!

Standard room — P1,960 a night (good for two people)

Coco’s Garden Master Bedroom Manila
 
AIR BNB is the latest trend when looking for accommodations. The website allows you to look for hosts or homeowners that are willing to rent their house.
 
Using the site is easy! Just enter your destination and a list of available accommodations would come up, together with all the other info that you need.

Barbara’s Heritage Restaurant

This restaurant has been open for more than 20 years already and each dish it offers has a taste of history. You can try their famous Asado de Carajay or “ox tongue,” Seafood Amelie pasta, and their Pollo Sofia chicken dish named after the Queen of Spain.  
 
Buffet sets are also available here. Dinner buffets are pricier because it comes with a cultural show. Not bad!

Sakae Sushi

Ilustrado Restaurant

Your sweet tooth is not forgotten, Biyaheros. If you want to try something new and have a taste of our Filipino culture, go for Ilustrado Restaurant’s Sampaguita ice cream! According to Drew, it tastes like how it smells. Other ice cream flavors include Nilagang Mani, Nougat, Pandan, and Pinipig!
 
The restaurant also offers Filipino dishes like bangus relleno, kaldereta, and kare-kare.

Globe Lumpia House

This little store has been around for 58 years already. The lumpia that they serve is always fresh and new. It’s no wonder that long lines are expected here everyday!

Mang Rado’s Lechon
2139 Simon St., cor. F. Barona St., Tondo, Manila
 
For less than a hundred pesos, you can get a taste of Mang Rado’s famous lechon. This carinderia is also famous for its Tumbong Soup.

Kanto Freestyle

Kanto Freestyle is an all-day breakfast resto that is open 24/7! It is a go-to place for call center agents who work near the area. It is always nice to have comfort food after a day’s (or night’s) work, and this place offers just that. 
 
You can try their best selling fluffy peanut butter and banana pancakes. They also offer our favorite breakfast dishes like beef tapa, tuyo, longganisa, omelette, and more!

Pocco Deli
Kapitoylo, Pasig City
If you are a meat lover then Pocco Deli is the place to be! Their bacon slab is meatier than the usual bacon with noticeable fat layers. Other must tries include their sausage sampler and meatloaf.
 
If you have friends you have not seen for a long while, try inviting them here for a chill night out at Pocco Deli. The restaurant also has a wide selection of wines if you’re up for a classy dining experience.

Calderon

Spanish food lovers are most welcome in Calderon. You cannot go wrong with their mouth-watering Paella dishes!
Calderon makes sure that they marinate their dishes well. For the Pollo Iberico, make sure that you place your order one day in advance because it takes 24 hours to perfect the flavor!

Good Burgers

These burgers definitely live up to their name. Good Burgers offer a healthier option to our favorite comfort food!
 
Aside from their veggie burger patties, their bread is also something for the books. According to Drew, its texture and softness reminds him of pandesal.

Epic Café

Have you ever seen a rainbow cake before, Biyaheros? This is what happened when Drew saw one during his visit to Epic Café! 
Epic is also managed by the people from Pocco Deli. They take pride in their coffee making process which they consider as a form of art.
 
The place offers a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere that is why it is greatly loved by students and other people who want to have their “me” time.

Lia’s Cakes

Are you a fan of avocado like Drew? Then you must try the avocado cheesecake from Lia's Cakes! Other must tries include their apple pie, ube cake, and chocolate cake.

Bambike Ecotours

Intramuros, the walled city, was established in the 15th century, and we are lucky that it is still being valued by tourists up to this day.
 
To have that full Intramuros experience, you can go for the two and a half hour Bambike Ecotour! The Bamboo bikes were made by Gawad Kalinga as part of their sustainable community development projects. These bikes even have different styles including the standard type, Japanese bikes, chopper bikes, and mountain bikes.
