Traveling the south is such a pleasure. This week, Drew Arellano visits Western Samar and explores its underrated white sand beaches and low mountain ranges. Join him in this “Biyahe ni Drew” itinerary!

How to get there?

To get to Western Samar, it will take you mostly an hour of plane ride from Manila going to Calbayog City. This will be your jump-off point to the island.

Biyahero tip: You may find it hard to ride a cab, van or jeepney from the airport so it is better if you check in a hotel near Calbayog City or near your travel destination because their packages include transportation service which includes fetching you from the airport.

Where to go and what to do?

Ulot River
Paranas, Samar

Ulot is a local term for ‘monkey.’ The body of water was named as such because back then, native monkeys used to live near the river.

To be able to cross Ulot River, you will need to ride a torpedo boat.

“Maganda rito, parang nasa kamay din ng bangkero ang bilis at saya ng paglalakbay sa river. ‘Yung dinaanan na rapids, short but fun. Less than an hour. Trek ng konti, hanap ng lugar saan puwede kumain ng lunch,” Drew says.

Biyahero tip: Riding the torpedo boats will surely get you wet so brace yourself. It is best not to bring your electronics on board but if you love taking videos and selfies, bring waterproof bags for protection!

Rock climbing
Marubut, Samar

Beaches here in Samar will remind you of classic beaches in Indonesia, Thailand, and Palawan. But Marubut, Samar has something new to offer besides white sand beaches and the picturesque sunset setting.

In Marubut, you can channel your inner Spiderman as you climb your way up the rock formation. But be sure that your body and mind are prepared for this kind of activity because there is no harness to ensure your safety. The good news is, if you slip, you will fall into the water that's deep enough to catch you. That’s a relief!

“Siyempre malaking advantage [kung] ang physique ay sexy at maliit. Experience ko before, may harness. This is probably the most difficult rock climbing ever,” Drew says.

Where to stay?
Calawayan Palm Island Resort and Restaurant

In Calawayan Resort, you can avail of a standard beach villa for only P4, 900. It is inclusive of two bedrooms good for four persons. There is also an additional bed located in the attic perfect for star gazing.

What to eat?

Inutok
Since Western Samar is known for its bountiful waters, seafoods are a must try. Inutok is one of the best tasting delicacies in the province. This is a dish made of shredded shrimps with coconut meat. It is topped with coconut milk for additional flavor.

Unlike any other travel spots, there is still much to discover in Western Samar. So grab the opportunity now, Biyaheros, and visit this virgin destination while it is still in its purest and most natural form! ---Gerald Vista/BMS
