Home remedies for dry, greasy hair from ‘Good News’
"Good News" airs every Monday, 8:00 p.m. on GMA News TV Channel 11. Follow the "Good News" Facebook page and Twitter account for more tips to make your summer a memorable one!
Brittle, frizzy and dry hair – let’s face it – as much as it can damage our skin, the sun can also have a nasty effect on our locks.
Heat from the sun leaves hair brittle and dull by weakening its natural protective protein. The damage can be most obvious to color-treated hair, which eventually becomes faded and bleached. Even hair that isn’t colored can suffer from sun-induced stress, caused by UV rays and humidity.
But no worries! With the help of some budget-friendly ingredients (and a lot of TLC), you can maintain your smooth and silky hair all summer long. Dermatologist Dr. Raquel Marfori-David shares with “Good News” summer hair care tips to keep your hair healthy – without too much hassle.
Tips against chemical damage
Before taking a dip in the pool, remember that our hair is like a dry sponge that is ready to soak up chemicals saturated in the water. To avoid chlorine damage and discoloration, Dra. Marfori-David advises applying vinegar and baking soda to your hair after you go swimming.
Vinegar hair treatment
1 cup of vinegar
Water
In a dipper, mix the vinegar with water. After applying shampoo, rinse and massage your hair with the vinegar-water mix.
“Kapag nag-swi-swimming tayo, nawawala ang natural pH or balanse ng ating scalp at buhok dahil nai-i-strip ito ng chlorine,” Dr. Marfori-David explains. “Ang ginagawa ng vinegar dito, nire-restore niya ‘yung natural balance ng ating buhok.”
Baking soda hair treatment
1 tsp. baking soda
Water
Shampoo
Dissolve the baking soda in a small container with water. Add shampoo. Mix thoroughly, then apply to hair. Leave it for a minute before rinsing.
“Baking soda neutralizes the alkalinity and maintains the pH of our hair,” said Dr. Marfori-David.
Tips against greasy hair
Extra sweating wreaks greasy havoc on hair. Greasy hair can cause a scalp infection, so it’s essential to keep your hair free from excess oil.
Baby powder and tea may just be your allies against oily hair.

Baby powder
Blush brush
Comb
Using a blush brush, rub baby powder into your roots. Massage the powder thoroughly into your scalp. Comb your hair afterwards.
“Ang baby powder ay may content na talcum which acts as the decreasing agent para siya ang mag-absorb ng sobrang oil at grease sa ating ulo,” Dra. Marfori-David explained.
Tea remedy
Tea
Water
Dissolve tea in water. Use it as final rinse when taking a bath.
Tea cleanses the scalp and removes residues and oil in our hair. “Ang tea ay mayroong nilalaman na tannic acid which acts as a natural astringent. Ito ang naglilinis sa ating buhok,” Dra. Marfori-David said. — Donna Allanigue/PF, GMA News
