Share anywhere: Pop Talk reviews mobile projectors

If waiting for a Wi-Fi connection isn’t your thing, there’s a faster way to share photos with your friends. Bulky projectors were once reserved only for office boardrooms and lecture halls.  But now thanks to mobile projectors, this gadget can now easily fit into your pocket.  Mobile projectors are relatively new to the market, and still a novelty to most people.  Here are some cool and creative ways that they can be used:

  • Work. Use a mobile projector for work presentations on the go.
  • Home. Project an e-book onto your ceiling for a unique bedtime story with the kids, or project a slideshow of photos and think up your own story.
  • Parties. Snap photos at a party and project them onto the wall as the gathering winds down.
In a recent episode of the GMA News TV product review show “Pop Talk,” tech expert Janette Toral, trade officer KM Regalario, and actor-slash-techie dad Troy Montero joined host Tonipet Gaba for a hands-on review of three mobile projectors available on the Philippine market.  Together the reviewers listed the strengths (‘Pop’) and weaknesses (‘Flop’) of three products:

Samsung Galaxy Beam: P21,990   Pop

  •  It’s also a fully functional mobile phone with all the power of a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. The mobile projector adds value to the phone, not the other way around.
  • It can project a clear, 50 inch image from a distance as far away as two meters.
  • It comes with an extra battery—definitely a plus!
  • Troy liked the light body and stylish yellow casing.

Flop

  • It does not come with a tripod, which means you’ll have to hold it while projecting. Janette observed that if you want stability (say, if you want to watch a longer video), this will not give you the optimum viewing experience.

Final verdict Design and features: 3/3 Projector performance: 3/3 Price: 3/3 Total Pop Points: 9/9

Mili Pico Projector: P22,500   Pop

  •  Of the three mobile projectors tried, the reviewers agreed that the Mili Pico had the best projector performance both in terms of image size (55”) and quality.
  • Its slim design makes it especially handy. It also comes with its own tripod.
  • The Mili Pico also doubles as a charging dock for your iPhone, eliminating the need for an extra battery and making it perfect for movie marathons.

Flop

  • It’s only compatible with iPhones.
  • Since it’s an add-on product rather than a stand-alone projector, the high price tag doesn’t seem worth it—not when you can buy the Galaxy Beam for the same amount.

Final verdict Design and features: 1/3 Projector performance: 3/3 Price: 0/3 Total Pop Points: 4/9

Intex 8809: P5,999   Pop

  • Insane value for money! This cellphone doubles as a mobile projector and also has dual SIM capability.
  • Accessories include an extra battery and tripod.
  • Again, the Intex 8809 offers amazing value for money. Not only is it cheaper than other mobile projectors, it’s cheaper than many non-projecting cellphones!

  Flop

  •  The 36” projected image size isn’t that impressive, though it isn’t bad either.
  • You sacrifice image quality for the low price—images projected beyond a distance of four feet appear fuzzy. Then again, all our reviewers felt this wasn’t enough to detract from the overall awesomeness of the Intex 8809. As Janette put it: “I’m amazed you can offer a dual SIM phone that has a projector for such a low price.”
