Waterproof Cellphones: The ‘Pop Talk’ Review

Here in the Philippines, we’re surrounded by bodies of water and bombarded with monsoon rains—who wouldn’t want a waterproof cellphone? In a recent episode of ‘Pop Talk,’ a panel of reviewers including Tonipet Gaba, actor-slash-techie Rocco Nacino, surfing coach Lorraine Lapus, and Mark Milan Macanas of TechPinas put three waterproof cellphones to the test in a water park! They tried making phone calls while riding a water slide, texting underwater, taking photos under a shower, and even pouring a glass of water over the phones.

Sony Xperia Acro S The basics:

  • Price: P26,990
  • Operating system: Android
  • Camera: 12 megapixels
  • Waterproof up to 1 meter underwater
What’s ‘Pop’ about it?
  • Slick design
  • High-quality front-facing camera
  • Good audio quality
What’s ‘Flop’ about it?
  • None.
Final Verdict: 9/9 Pop Points
Motorola Defy The basics:
  • Price: P12,350
  • Operating System: Android
  • Camera: 5 megapixels
  • Waterproof up to 1 meter underwater
What’s ‘Pop’ about it?
  • It’s dustproof and scratch-resistant thanks to its Gorilla Glass screen
  • Decent camera quality
What’s ‘Flop’ about it?
  • The touch-screen is sensitive—dunking it in water will “press” buttons.
Final Verdict: 7/9 Pop Points

Samsung B2100 The basics:

  • Price: P3,500
  • Video capable, rubberized housing
  • Waterproof at 1 meter
What’s ‘Pop’ about it?
  • Price!
What’s ‘Flop’ about it?
  • The phone did not stand submersion tests. Water leaked into the LCD and stalled the phone for a while. Eventually the phone did work underwater, and was even able to take photos and pay music.  But in the end, the phone did not live up to its waterproof claim. As long as you don’t submerge the phone, though, it’s fine. The phone is more “water resistant” than waterproof.
Final Verdict: 6/9 Pop Points -Cristina Tantengco, PF/GMA News
