Will love win for this Filipino transgender being publicly discriminated?
"Reel Time" airs every Sunday, 8:00 PM, on GMA News TV. For more information, follow the show on Facebook and Twitter. For updates on your favorite documentaries, follow also the official Facebook page of GMA Public Affairs.
Last June 26, the United States of America’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage for all its 50 states, prompting a social media frenzy on Twittersphere with the celebratory #LoveWins hashtag and the domination of rainbow-colored profile photos on Facebook.
But is the Philippines ready to grant this same equal right to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, queer and intersexed (LGBTQI) community in the country? Or at the least, do Filipinos’ care about their rights?
For its June 28 episode, GMA News TV documentary “Reel Time” set up a social experiment to see if #LoveWins holds true for Filipinos, will they react when a member of the LGBTQI community is being ridiculed? Will someone stand up for their right?
Mark Castillo posed as a crossdresser being bullied by two homophobic men in a public street in Quezon City. Derogatory remarks were thrown at him, and to heat things up, he was seen being pushed and assaulted by the homophobes.

Mark, a transgender himself, said their mean words and behavior affected him, “Alam ko pong kasabwat ko ‘yung tatlong lalaki doon pero ang naramdaman ko po, siyempre nasaktan po ako. Masakit po ‘yung mga sinasabi nila.”
Many passersby and street vendors ignored Mark and his abusers. “Talagang parang hopeless,” he recalls. “Tinitigan lang [nila kami] tapos dedma lang. Talagang sumasawsaw pa sila kung ano ang sinasabi na masama towards sa akin. Talagang sumasang-ayon sila nang bongga.”
But when hope became grim, a young mother with a baby did the most unexpected. Watch the video here:
