Late comedian Arvin “Tado” Jimenez and Lei Segovia had been together for 20 years before he passed away in a vehicular accident in Bontoc, Mountain Province last February.

In an interview with “Wagas,” Lei said she does not regret anything about their relationship, though she wishes his colorful life didn’t end too soon.

“Nakakalungkot lang, marami pa sanang oras,” she said.

Here are the some love lessons we can pick up from the inspiring tale of the comedian and his loving wife.

True love sees beyond the superficial

They say first impressions last, but in Tado and Lei's story, it only took a few conversations for her to realize that he was more than just a weird guy with ragged clothes and long hair.

Lei admits that Tado gave her a bad impression during their first few meetings. There were also times when she felt uncomfortable around him.

"Ang dumi-dumi niya, sira-sira ang damit," she said.

Still, Lei gave Tado a chance. They spent afternoons together, just sitting next to each other and talking about random things.

Later on, she realized that he was actually nice and fun to be with – not to mention naturally witty.

"Humahanga ako sa taong 'to. Hindi ko naiisip ang mga naiisip niya," Lei shared.

Love is not always about the grand gestures

In movies and soap operas, grand romantic gestures usually signify how deep or how true one's love is. In real life, the simple and everyday acts matter more – it makes the relationship bloom and the love grow stronger.

In college, Tado always visited Lei in her theater rehearsals and performances, bringing turon and sometimes santan flowers. It was all he could afford during that time, but he made up for it by giving Lei something money can’t buy – countless poems Tado wrote especially for her.

Even when they already had kids, he always expressed how much he loved her.

"Kahit magkaaway kami, magka-holding hands kami," Lei said.

Give it your all or regret for the rest of your life

If you truly love someone, say it. If you want to spend time with your significant other, go for it. In this world where everything is uncertain, not giving it your all when you had the chance and the luxury of time might mean regret for the rest of your life.

"Ang wagas na pag-ibig ay 'yung ibibigay mo ang lahat,” said Lei. “Kasi hindi mo alam [ang susunod na mangyayari]."

Lei thinks Tado could have done more for their family and his advocacies if he didn't pass away that fateful day in February. But what matters now is that, in the short time that he lived, he didn’t let anything hold him back from expressing himself.

Even during his last moments with Lei, Tado proved he was still the sweet and thoughtful man Lei fell in love with more than 20 years ago.

What were the last things Tado told her before he left? "Nag-I love you [siya] saka thank you nang maraming-marami," Lei tearfully but gladly reminisced. —Rica Fernandez/CM, GMA News
