Why ‘Born to be Wild’ host Doc Nielsen and his wife should be your #relationshipgoal
This Saturday, “Born to be Wild” host Doc Nielsen Donato and his wife Carol will be sharing their love story in the GMA News TV drama series “Wagas.” Doc Nielsen, who we know for gallantly rescuing deadly snakes and crocodiles without hesitation for his Sunday show, was actually shy (a.k.a torpe) in his younger days when it came to the love of his life Carol. But aside from their rather unique (and funny) love story as a couple, we share to you the top reasons why their 20-year marriage should be one of your #relationshipgoals.
1. They regularly work out together (Awww!)

Doc Nielsen, 48 years-old, and Carol, 44 years-old, regularly work out together thrice a week. “Usually nagwo-work out kami ng 7 AM, one hour lang. She’s the one who got me started into it. Kasi before, I used to complain about my back[pain], and she suggested na why don’t we start to get fit and eat healthy since my family is prone to diabetes and heart disease. She helps me get fit for the show too. She was the one who inspired me,” Doc Nielsen fondly recounts.
Trivia: Carol Donato used to be a bodybuilder. She even won “Miss Photogenic” in a bodybuilding competition.

2. They are travel buddies too.
Doc Nielsen visits remote areas all over the country to film wildlife and promote conservation, but not known to many, his better half Carol is quite the adventurer too!
Doc Nielsen explains, “We look forward to travelling together. If I have a conference out of the country, isinasama ko siya. Sabi ng parents namin, ‘When you’re still young and able, that’s the best time to travel.’ I don’t want to go places without her. I want to share my experiences and adventures with her.”

3. They implement a strict rule: weekend is for family
It’s one of the oldest excuses in the book; a partner cheats because the other doesn’t spend enough time in the relationship.
This is why Doc Nielsen and his wife see to it that the family gets together every weekend. “Everybody is busy in the week days; the kids are busy at school, I’m busy at work, so every weekend kailangan talaga lumabas kami. We grill steak or seafood. Kapag nagluluto ako natutuwa si Carol. Family-oriented talaga kami.”

4. They support each other’s hobbies and pursuits
Being in a relationship does not mean you have to give up your individuality and adjust your whole life to cater to your partner’s needs.
“I wouldn’t want to hinder his goals. Kung ano'ng gusto niya, sige, you go. Kung it’s for your betterment, hindi ako magdadalawang-isip (na pumayag),” Carol explains.
Carol willingly supports Doc Nielsen’s passion for educating people to love and care for nature more, while Doc Nielsen also supports Carol’s love for fitness, arts, and gardening. He even brags about his wife’s pursuits in his Instagram account.
But before reaching this level of mutual respect and secure love for one another, Doc Nielsen and Carol had to surpass difficult trials that almost broke their marriage. Find out more about their story on “Wagas,” Saturday, 7 PM on GMA News TV! ----BMS, GMA Public Affairs
