MIAA reminds HK-bound passengers about prohibited items

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) on Tuesday reminded air passengers bound for Hong Kong not to bring prohibited items in their carry-on or and check-in luggage to avoid being apprehended by authorities.

Signs placed in airports reinforced the message after a Filipino student going to Canada was intercepted in Hong Kong airport for possessing extendable batons in his baggage, MIAA said.

Stun guns, tear gas, bullets, extendable batons, flick knives, and knuckle dusters are considered arms and are restricted under Hong Kong's firearms and ammunition ordinance.

"The unlicensed possession of these restricted items is, upon conviction, punishable by a fine of HK$100,000 and a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment," MIAA's warning reads.

Earlier this month, authorities at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) confiscated two flick knives in the belongings of an Israeli and a Filipino bound for Hong Kong.

According to MIAA, a total of 81 Filipinos, mostly seafarers, were convicted in Hong Kong for possession of arms without a license in 2014.

Bullets declared as amulets remain number one on NAIA's confiscation list.

MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal advised travelers to be mindful of what they bring during their trips.

"It is wise to check with the airline what they can and cannot bring on board. The Office for Transportation Security has a list of prohibited items that they can also use as guide in packing their bags," Monreal said.

Passengers may also refer to the list of prohibited items on air travel released by the Department of Transportation. — Dona Magsino/BM, GMA News
