No Filipinos hurt in magnitude-7.2 quake in Mexico —DFA

The were no Filipinos hurt in the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that hit Mexico City, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Saturday.

Citing initial report from the Embassy of the Philippines in Mexico, the DFA said that no casualties have been reported, either among the Filipino community or among the Mexican populace.

Some buildings were reported as damaged in Mexico City and Oaxaca State, it said.

The magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Mexico in the state of Oaxaca on Friday at around 5:30 p.m. (Mexican time) or around 7:30 a.m., February 17 (Philippine time).

The epicenter was located around 600 kilometers from Mexico City.

The shaking lasted from 30 seconds up to a minute, and several aftershocks were recorded and felt in some areas. The quake, however, was not as violent as the major temblor that struck the city on September 19, 2017 and caused over 300 fatalities.

The embassy continues to monitor the situation and check with FilCom (Filipino Community Center) members to confirm their status and safety, the DFA said. — MDM, GMA News
