Filipino woman on China death row gets 2-year reprieve – report

A Filipino woman on China's death row got a two-year reprieve of her sentence, a week after Chinese authorities executed three of her countrymen for drug trafficking, radio dzBB reporter Tuesday. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) interpreted the two-year reprieve as life imprisonment for Myrna San Pedro, who was also convicted of the same crime, the dzBB report added. The DFA quoted a report from the Philippine Embassy in Beijing, saying that said San Pedro was initially meted out the death sentence in Xiamen. Her case was then remanded to the lower court for the imposition of a death sentence with a two-year reprieve. Life imprisonment depends on good behavior within the two-year period, the dzBB report quoted the DFA as saying. On March 30, Chinese authorities proceeded to execute Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain in the midst of mounting appeals from Philippine officials and Migrante, a progressive migrant workers group to spare them. — PE/VS, GMA News
