St. Benilde student represents PHL at film workshop in China


A Filipino film student who majors in film at the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde represented the Philippines at a a three-day workshop at the Grand Millenium Beijing Hotel in China from December 1 to 2. Gino Martin Santos, 22, joined the film workshop organized by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) Asia Pacific and the China International Copyright Expo (CICE).   The workshop is for budding filmmakers go through the mentorship of experts in China's film industry and leading producers and executives from some of the world's biggest studios and film production outfits. Orly Ilacad, president of the Philippine Motion Picture Producers Association (PMMPA) called Santos "one of the most promising young Filipino makers today."   Santos won an award at the 23rd Gawad CCP for his short experimental film titled "Bangungut" and was chosen as one of the ten finalists for the Short Film Competition of the seventh Cinemalaya Film Festival. He also had the chance to work with 2009 Cannes Film Festival Best Director Brillante Mendoza.   Film workshop   Established in 2006, the workshop aims to "provide an opportunity for filmmakers to develop their careers [and] build networks" through discussions of:

  • filmmaking,
  • film marketing,
  • film distribution, and
  • co-production between China and the international community.
  Among this year's presenters or mentors are Ira Deutchman, chair of Columbia University's Film School, and John Polson, director of hit US television shows "The Mentalist" and "The Good Wife."   Joining them were:
  • scriptwriter-director Xue Xiaolu, a professor at the Beijing Film Academy;
  • Shanghai International Film Festival director Tang Lijun;
  • executive producer Harris E. Tulchin;
  • Bona Film International chairman Yu Dong;
  • Sid Ganis, four-time president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences;
  • Australian film director-scriptwriter Alister Grierson;
  • China Media Consulting (California) Lora Chen;
  • China Film Co-Production Corporation president Zhang Xun;
  • John Kuyper of Warner Bros.;
  • "Premier" Australian-Chinese filmmaker Pauline Chan; and
  • Motion Picture Literary Department agent Bec Smith.
  Delegate filmmakers were selected by their local communities through various film-related competitions and evaluation exercises conducted by some of the region's leading film practitioners and institutions. -  with Rose-An Jessica Dioquino, VVP, GMA News
