Pinoy students win in science tilt in Brunei
A group of Filipino students was cited as the best team in the "ASEAN+3 Junior Science Odyssey" (APTJSO) competition at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) from June 10 to 17. According to a news release of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) in West Visayas represented the country in the competition with the theme "Science and the Dynamics of Tropical Rainforest." "Over 70 students aged 13 to 15 from the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, participated in various scientific experiments, fieldworks, and assessments conducted at the UBD 's Faculty of Science and Bukit Sawat Forest Reserve," the DFA said. Two teams from the PSHS System represented the Philippines: (1) PSHS-Western Visayas (includes teacher Flordeliza Remonde and students Magin Benedict Ferrer, Ina Mae Sison and Vicah Adrienne Villanueva), and (2) PSHS-Central Luzon (includes teacher Arnold Pitpitunge and students Gabrielle Sophia Louise Seva, Mikhael Edrich Eubanas, and Angel Gabriel Pindea). Leading the Philippine contingent was Executive Director Josette Biyo. The winners in the different categories were: Chemistry/Physics Laboratory Skills Assessment Gold: PSHS-West Visayas Silver: PSHS-Central Luzon Biology Field Work Gold: Ina Mae Sison Silver: Gabrielle Sophia Louise Seva Bronze: Angel Gabriel Pineda The competition aims to:
- encourage gifted students to excel in science and technology;
- stimulate students' intellectual curiosity;
- foster friendship and networking in the APT region, and
- motivate the students to pursue careers in science and technology.
