Ex-Binibining Pilipinas hopeful named 1st runner-up in Mrs. Asia pageant
By ANDREI MEDINA, GMA News
Former Binibining Pilipinas contestant – Mrs. Jennylyn Salazar Isherwood – was crowned 1st runner-up of the first ever Mrs. Asia International held in Malaysia from June 21 to 25.
Isherwood, 36, mother of two, joined the 30 to 50 years old category of the Mrs. Asia pageant.
The winners were:
DIAMOND AWARDS
Mrs. Asia International Tourism: Hong Cui (China)
Mrs. Asia International Globe: Srimali Kumari (Sri Lanka)
Mrs. Asia International All Nations: Sherrine Teoh (Singapore)
Mrs. Asia International World: Kim Marrie Thong (Singapore)
Mrs. Asia International Cosmopolitan: Carmen Chin (Malaysia)
PLATINUM AWARDS
Mrs. Asia International, 1st runner up: Jennylyn Isherwood (Philippines)
Mrs. Asia International, 2nd runner up: Candice Tie (Malaysia)
No regrets Isherwood told GMA News Online on Thursday that she was "quite happy with the results." "I think all the winners deserve their titles. I wasn't really expecting to make it to the top 7 but luckily I did and I consider it a really wonderful achievement,” she said.
“The only sadness that I felt was when I left for Malaysia because it was the very first time that I was away from my kids that long and that far,” Isherwood recounted.
About the pageant, she said she had "no regrets or disappointments because I believe I did my very best.”
For the question and answer portion, Isherwood was asked by the judges: “What does motherhood mean to you?”
“Motherhood is a noble role bestowed upon women by God. Being a mother is difficult yet also very rewarding. Despite the challenges, knowing that you have your children and that they love you and appreciate everything that you do for them, that makes it a very rewarding experience,” she answered.
Best performance award
The five-day pageant had several segments where the contestants had to wear evening gowns, cocktail dresses, Hawaiian costumes, and even traditional dresses.
There was also a talent portion where contestants were given two minutes to showcase their talent.
Isherwood chose to sing an original piece her mother composed and bagged the Best Performance Award.
“Having won the Mrs. Best Performance Award and Mrs. Asia International 2012 1st runner-up makes me really happy,” Isherwood said.
“It also made me very proud of my nationality and hopefully I also made other Filipinos proud by being 1st runner up in the said pageant,” she added. Back to "normal"
Asked what her next plans were, Isherwood said “life goes back to normal and I have to get back to work and focus on my family especially my kids.”
“The pageant though has really enhanced my confidence and enlightened my spirit.
It made me realize a lot of things like how we can do so much in our lives. What's next for me? Well, I will just keep on doing my best to inspire other women,” she added.
Isherwood said she learned that "joining a pageant can already make you a winner because not everyone is given this kind of opportunity."
She urged others not to limit themselves "because there is so much this life has to offer and there is so much to explore."
“Lastly, it may not be much but I have learned and experienced a variety of culture which is great because I believe that the more you experience, the more you learn and the better person you become,” she concluded.
Isherwood is currently working as an administrative assistant at Integrated Hydro-Pneumatic Systems, Inc. while being a freelance writer for an SEO (search engine optimized) company.
She is thankful for the support that she received from Parañaque Mayor Florencio Bernabe, Jr., Ovette Ricalde, Boyet Dysangco and Integrated Hydro-Pneumatic Systems, Inc., among others.
She also cites her family and friends as her source of motivation. - VVP, GMA News
