Choir in New York marks 25th year of sainthood of San Lorenzo Ruiz

The San Lorenzo Ruiz Choir of New York celebrated its fifth anniversary as an organization that aims to enrich Christian faith and Philippine culture through music. This occasion coincides with the 25th year of the sainthood of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila, after whom the choir is named.
To commemorate these occasions, the choir held a concert entitled “5@25” on September 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension at 86-13 55th Avenue, in Elmhurst, Queens. The repertoire will include inspirational, standard, Broadway, and OPM favorites.

Aside from being a thanksgiving celebration, the event was also intended to be a fundraiser for victims of the severe floods in the Philippines, especially those who were affected by tropical monsoon Habagat last July.

Under the artistic direction of Rogelio B. Peñaverde Jr., a professional opera singer currently based in New York, and the music direction of Enrico Lagasca and Leo Leal, both alumni members of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, the choir will receive the distinction of being a Heritage Awardee of The Outstanding Filipino Americans in New York this October. This is in recognition of its steadfast contribution toward enriching the cultural identity of Filipino Americans in the New York area. It has also received citations from the Philippine Development Foundation for its contributions to charitable causes. - The FilAm
