Pinay shines in Canadian reality singing competition 'La Voix'
Filipina Maria Janice Galvez is part of the top 24 remaining contestants in the Canadian singing reality competition "La Voix" (The Voice). Galvez, 30, told GMA News Online via email that she recently won her 'duel' – a segment where two contestants sing the same song in parts – against Gabryelle Frappier in February. Both sang "Les Uns Contre les Autres," a French song originally by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon. “I have sang French songs since the beginning of the competition,” Galvez explained. She passed the blind audition and pre-audition screening process which began on September 15 last year where only 140 out of over 4,000 hopefuls were made to go to the next stage. Galvez left the Philippines for Canada only in 2011 to seek greener pastures. “I left Philippines to come here in Canada, August in 2011. Last time I was in the Philippines was 2008-2011,” she said. She is currently part of the team under the mentorship of voice coach Jean-Pierre Ferland. They will be having their first live show this coming Sunday. Canada is one of the top 10 destinations of Filipinos with 842,651 Filipinos, based on the 2011 Stock Estimate of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas. - VVP, GMA News
