Pinoy wows judges, moves past blind auditions in 'The Voice UK'
A Filipino singer based in the United Kingdom survived the final blind auditions of reality singing competition "The Voice UK" and has joined the team of iconic performer Tom Jones.
After singing "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by The Shirelles, twenty-one-year-old Joseph Apostol from Kent moved past the auditions along with other aspiring contestants, according to a blog entry posted by "The Voice UK" on Saturday, May 4.
After having survived the blind auditions, Apostol is now set to compete in the coming weeks with 47 other contestants to bag the honor of winning the singing competition.
UK-based Unreality TV said "The Voice UK" judges Jessie J and Tom Jones were "scrapping over him" because of how he "wowed" them with his singing.
"I think that you would be a huge asset to my team. I think I need to make sure that I’m representing people that really know how to tell a story when they’re singing. And that’s exactly what you did, so congratulations," Jessie J was quoted as saying.
However, Apostol eventually joined the team of Tom Jones, who had this to say about the young singer:
"I thought he did a great job with that song. I’ve only got one spot left open, and I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting. But when I heard you, I heard the passion and range that you have. And there’s a lot of fire there. And you didn’t copy anybody," Jones said.
"You have an original sounding voice. I know there’s a lot of great (Filipino) singers, because I’ve been to the Philippines and I’ve heard them sing and you really do have a great voice and I’d love to have you on my team," he continued.
According to Apostol's "The Voice UK" profile, he said moving to the UK from the Philippines was "a real culture shock."
"He describes himself as a bit of a joker and says his mum has always been his biggest fan. He dreams of getting signed, making music and touring the world," his profile said.
"Joseph likes his old school music and before his Blind Audition he said his ideal coach would be Sir Tom. Guess what? He picked Sir Tom. It looks like everything is falling into place for young Joseph..." the profile continued. —Gian C. Geronimo/KG, GMA News
