PNoy urges OFWs to ignite patriotism, bayanihan spirit
As the nation marks its 115th Independence Day, President Benigno Aquino III called on overseas Filipino workers to "ignite the patriotism and bayanihan spirit" as they promote Philippine cultural heritage in their host countries. In his Independence Day message, which was posted Tuesday night in the Philippine's Bangkok embassy website, Aquino reminded OFWs that they are the Philippines' modern-day heroes in this period of revitalization, and should play their part in moving the country towards equitable progress and lasting reform. "Today, our people remain united in independence, and are now fighting another battle - to free ourselves from the shackles of ignorance, corruption, injustice and poverty," said Aquino. He added that the struggle of our forebears for freedom had not been in vain. Independence Day should be an opportunity for OFWs to "further promote our cultural heritage and uphold the Philippines' revived distinction in this globalized multicultural milieu," read the message. "Let us work as one collective, playing our part as custodians of peace and democracy, and as stakeholders in our movement towards equitable progress and lasting reform." — DVM, GMA News
