UP Streetdance Club wins bronze medal at 2013 World Hiphop Championship
For the second year in a row, the University of the Philippines Street Dance Club (UPSDC) took home the bronze medal in the Megacrew Division of the World Hiphop Championship, considered the Olympics of hip hop dance culture. UP’s official hip hop dance crew bested three other teams, including another Philippine group - the De La Salle Dance Company-Street, to place third in the competition, held Tuesday (Philippine Time) at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. With a score of 8.47 points, UPSDC was .33 points shy of the silver medal finish, which went to Canada’s Praise Team. The Royal Family crew from New Zealand won the gold medal in the Megacrew division with a score of 9.00. In 2012, UPSDC also placed third in the same category, competing against 15 other dance teams. Meanwhile, despite placing third in the semi-finals, the multi-awarded Philippine All Stars failed to snag a podium finish in the Adult division of this year's competition. The Rockwell team from Canada snagged the gold medal while the Identity group from New Zealand scored a silver medal. The Philippine All Stars dance group had previously won the gold medal in the World Hiphop Championship in 2006 and 2008. On its Twitter account, UPSDC paid tribute to all the Philippine teams that competed in the World Hiphop Championships, which featured over 2,500 dancers from 40 countries.
A total of five Philippine teams made it to the semifinals this year but only three— UPSDC, the Philippine All Star and the De La Salle Dance Company-Street—won the chance to compete in the grand finals of their respective divisions. — Xianne Arcangel/DVM, GMA NewsWe won bronze but truth is, WE ALL WON.
