4 young Pinays bag medals in China math olympiad


Four students from different Philippine schools won a total of eight medals and awards at the recently concluded 13th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad in Zhongshan City in Guangdong, China.

Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College and Andrea Jessica Jaba of St. Jude Catholic School bagged silver medals, while Isabel Jocyn Villanueva of PAREF Woodrose School and Isabella Mae Tan of St. Jude Catholic School took home bronze medals.

The Philippine team also scored several awards from the aerobic dance side event, winning first prize, Best in Creativity Award, Best in Cooperation Award, and Best in Stage Style Award.

In August, an all-male contingency also brought home medals from China and Singapore.

Adrian Reginald Sy, a student of St. Jude Catholic School, ended the country's nine-year gold medal drought in the 11th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad.

On the other hand, the Philippine team placed second overall in the 2014 International Mathematics Contest (IMC) at Singapore with 155 medals.

Prior to this, delegates to the 2014 Korea International Mathematics Competition in Daejeon, South Korea, also scooped up various awards, including two gold medals and a championship trophy. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
