Pinoy workers in Taiwan rally for fair treatment

Pro-OFW group Migrante International - Taiwan on Sunday held a protest action to press the Taiwanese Ministry of Labor to improve the rights of household workers in the state.

Their protest followed a similar action a week ago to hold tech manufacturer HTC accountable for the alleged mass sacking and unjust treatment of Filipino workers.

In a statement, Migrante Taiwan chairperson Gilda Banugan urged the labor ministry to add overseas household workers to the Labor Standard Act and to implement their days-off.

"The brokers and employers have a lot of violations of the law but have not been sanctioned and punished by the authorities," Banugan said.

"There are those who die from tragedies but do not receive benefits from Labor Insurance because it is not covered in the Labor Standard Act," she added.

A week prior to the protest action, Migrante joined forces with non-government organization Serve the People-Taoyuan (SPA) in calling for accountability from HTC for its alleged mistreatment of Filipino workers. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
