Pinoys in New York City hold own anti-SONA rally

Over 100 Filipinos based in New York City conducted their own protest rally to mark President Rodrigo Duterte's fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), according to an Unang Balita report on Monday.

Those who joined the activity were members of Migrante, Gabriela, Anakbayan and Malaya Movement.

The rallyists all wore white and carried a coffin-like object reportedly to symbolize the supposed death of democracy and press freedom in the Philippines.

Like their counterparts in the Philippines, the protesters were condemning the passage of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, which they believe would be used by the government to clamp down on dissent.

Tension, however, marred the activity when some Americans tried to meddle.

Despite this, the program concluded peacefully. —KBK, GMA News
