PH Embassy prepares to repatriate remains of Pinoy killed in Turkey quake

The Philippine Embassy in Turkey is processing the repatriation of the remains of one of two Filipinos who died in the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6 that badly hit the country and neighboring Syria.

“As requested by the daughter and with consent of the husband, the Embassy is arranging the immediate repatriation of the body of Wilma Abulad Tezcan, an OFW whose identity was previously reported by the media,” the embassy said in a statement.

“For our kababayan married to a Turkish, her family in the Philippines is seeking consent from her husband, regarding the treatment of her human remains,” it added.

Likewise, the embassy said it is still open to any and all information about Filipino expatriates in Turkey, and it can be contacted through telephone and WhatsApp (+905345772344), via email at ankara.pe@dfa.gov.ph, and Facebook at www.facebook.com/PHin Turkey.

Right after the deadly quake, the Philippines sent an Inter-Agency Humanitarian Contingent Team -- composed of 82 members -- to Turkey's Adiyaman province “to provide crucial search and rescue, and emergency medical assistance.”

Earlier, the embassy said that a Filipino previously reported as missing was found to be alive.

It has also evacuated more than 10 Filipino families from Antakya in Hatay province, one of the hardest-hit areas by the strong quake.

The families are currently being shuttled back to Ankara, Turkey's capital, where they will be sheltered.

“We continue to tirelessly reach out to as many Filipinos as possible and acknowledge the support of the local Filipino community leaders and their network,” the embassy said.

“The team will continue to exhaust all efforts to account for Filipinos in affected regions,” it added. —LBG, GMA Integrated News
