Philippine Consulate in New York monitors student protests

NEW YORK - The Philippine Consulate General in New York is closely monitoring the escalating pro-Palestinian demonstrations by students at universities and colleges in northeastern United States.

More than four hundred students have been arrested, including those from Columbia University, New York University, and City College of New York, where many Filipino and Filipino-American students study and teach.

According to the New York Police Department, 30 percent of the persons arrested are not students.

In a statement from the Philippine Consulate General, it was stated that they have not yet received reports of any Filipinos being among those arrested.

The consulate reminded Filipinos to abide by the law and avoid illegal activities.

"While the Philippine Consulate respects the rights of every individual to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, we urge all Filipinos, especially non-citizens, to comply with applicable laws to avoid legal risk. The Filipino Community is advised to stay informed, exercise caution, and prioritize personal safety."
