Japanese Embassy lauds Pinoy for saving 6-year-old from drowning

The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines commended an unnamed Filipino who saved a 6-year-old boy from drowning at the Hakozaki Wharf in Fukuoka, Japan.

“This remarkable act of courage showcases the unity and compassion that binds Japan and the  Philippines. We extend our deepest gratitude and admiration for this  #BayaningFilipino,” read the embassy's Tuesday statement.

According to the Japanese Asahi Shimbun news service, the Fukuoka Coast Guard received reports that a 6-year-old boy fell two meters into the sea without a life jacket.

The unnamed Filipino was fishing nearby and jumped into the sea to rescue the child, while other people nearby used ropes attached to a bucket and fishing nets to lift the boy back onto the wharf.

The Filipino, who was enrolled in the Japanese government’s technical intern training program, declined to provide his name and contact information to the victim’s family who wanted to give him a token of gratitude.

"What I did is not worth giving my name,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Fukuoka Coast Guard said that the incident may have been more serious without the Filipino's assistance. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
