Comelec to issue digital IDs for overseas voters

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to release digital identification cards for Filipino voters abroad.

In a statement, the Comelec said the digital voter's ID may also be used as an alternative ID for registering for the pilot internet voting in the May 2025 elections.

“Maliban sa passport, dapat meron silang nagagamit na isa pang valid ID. Ang naisip natin digital ID,” Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia said.

(Apart from passports, they should have alternative valid IDs. We came up with a digital ID.)

The Comelec will issue the full guidelines for securing the digital IDs on Monday, July 15, he added.

The pre-registration period for overseas voters who will participate in internet voting is from February 12, 2025, to May 12, 2025, which requires the submission of information and government-issued identification documents.

In November 2023, the Comelec announced it would implement internet voting for overseas Filipinos in the 2025 polls to increase voter turnout and make it more convenient for them. —Sundy Locus/VBL, GMA Integrated News
