Malabed's wife meets medical examiner but identification of body delayed
WASHINGTON, DC – Rio Malabed, wife of the late Police Colonel Pergentino “Bong” Malabed Jr., met with the medical examiner handling the remains of her husband and other victims of the tragic collision between American Airlines Flight 5342 and a Black Hawk helicopter.
However, the medical examiner has not yet permitted Rio to officially identify her husband's remains, citing procedural requirements that must be completed beforehand.
In a message to GMA News Online, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said that the Philippine Embassy in Washington is now assisting Malabed’s family through the necessary procedures.
“The Embassy is currently assisting his family who are currently in Washington,” he said.
So far, officials have identified 55 victims, including Malabed. The police official was identified through a passport found on his body.
Meanwhile, recovery teams have retrieved debris and the fuselage of the downed aircraft from the Potomac River, but 12 bodies remain missing.
Efforts are now focused on salvaging the Black Hawk helicopter near the crash site.
The American Airlines passenger jet and the Black Hawk helicopter collided in mid-air on Wednesday night (Washington time) near the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Both aircraft fell into the Potomac River. The accident claimed the lives of all those on board the passenger jet — 60 passengers and four crew. The three soldiers on board the chopper also died.
The Philippine National Police earlier said PNP Supply Management Division chief Malabed was on official travel for a pre-delivery inspection of 2,675 units of all-purpose vests.
“PCOL Malabed was on official travel at the time of the incident, fulfilling his duty as a dedicated police officer—committed to the service of protecting and securing both the PNP and the nation. His untimely passing is a profound loss to the PNP, where he served with honor, integrity, and dedication throughout his career,” the PNP said.
The PNP is considering giving an award to Malabed, spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said in a press briefing on Monday.
Consul General Rodriguez said the Consulate would closely monitor all documentation requirements to expedite the repatriation of Malabed’s remains so his family could give him a proper farewell in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Malabed's name has been placed on a makeshift memorial in Washington, DC. The Philippine flag was also placed on a cross.
