Dinagyang Festival to be held in Japan, New Zealand this year

Various contingents perform during the Dinagyang 2025 in Iloilo City.

The Dinagyang Festival is set to return to the international stage after getting an invitation to go to Osaka, Japan and Auckland, New Zealand this year, the local government said on Tuesday.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said the Dinagyang Festival was invited to be held in Japan and New Zealand in June and November, respectively.

“We are excited. This opportunity reignites our excitement to once again showcase internationally our pride and joy, the Dinagyang Festival,” Treñas said in a press release.

“It has always been a symbol of our faith, culture, unity, and creativity, and now, more than ever, we are eager to present the best of what we have to offer to a global audience,” he added.

Treñas said the local government expects more invitations in the coming years ''with the COVID-19 pandemic already behind us.''

According to Treñas, the last time the Dinagyang Festival was showcased abroad was in 2018 during the Philippine Independence Day in New York City.

The Dinagyang Festival celebrates the rich heritage of Iloilo province, featuring performances that highlight each town's unique delicacies, products, and specialties. It is celebrated to honor the Sto. Niño or the child Jesus Christ.

This year, nine "tribes" mesmerized residents and tourists with their world-class performances during the festival. One of the highlights, the Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan 2025, showcased the vibrant culture of Iloilo City.
