DMW rallies support for OFW whose child died in NAIA SUV crash
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has immediately activated a round-the-clock psychosocial counseling service for Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Danmark Masongsong and his family, whose lives were irreversibly changed at NAIA last weekend just as he was to fly abroad for work.
On Sunday, an SUV plowed into the departure area at Terminal 1, resulting in the death of two people, including Masongsong's 4-year-old daughter Malia.
In response to the devastating incident, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has directed that the physical and mental health of affected OFWs be prioritized. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac explained that a dedicated team of nurses and social workers has been assigned to provide continuous psychosocial counseling. “We have surrounded Mr. Masongsong and his family with professionals ready to assist them 24/7—not only in addressing their mental health needs during this critical period but also for any other support they might request,” he said.
Support extends beyond emotional counseling. Personnel from both the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) attended the wake to offer their assistance. Financial help is also in the pipeline, as both Masongsong and his wife—former OFWs who worked in Taiwan—will be given the necessary aid to help them through this difficult time. “We will provide financial assistance when the time is right, both for him and for his wife,” added Cacdac.
Adding another layer to the unfolding story, Masongsong’s employer was quickly informed of the catastrophe. In coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Prague and through a discussion with Philippine’s labor attaché in the Czech Republic, According to Cacdac, the employer expressed shock at the tragedy. Although saddened by the unforeseen incident that prevented Masongsong from boarding his flight to Prague, the employer is also taking a compassionate stance. Plans are underway to personally reach out to extend condolences to the grieving OFW. — BM, GMA Integrated News
