PH consulate prepares repatriation of Pinoy fatalities in Vancouver attack

Philippine officials in Canada are preparing the repatriation of the remains of Filipinos killed in the April 26 attack at a street festival in Vancouver that left 11 people dead.

Maria Andrelita Austria, Manila’s ambassador to Ottawa, said the embassy is also monitoring the status of the Filipinos who were among the dozens injured after a car plowed into a crowd celebrating Filipino heritage at the Lapu-Lapu Block party.

“The consulate is currently facilitating the repatriation of the remains of Filipino nationals who lost their lives and are in close coordination with the families of the victims. Assistance is being provided to the affected families,” Austria said in a statement.

Thirty-year-old male suspect identified as Kai-Ji Adam Lo, who had a history of mental health issues and run-ins with Canadian authorities, was arrested on the scene and charged with eight counts of second-degree murder.

Austria did not provide the identities of the victims or say if all those killed were Filipinos or Filipino-Canadians.

“We continue to monitor the status of the injured and are working closely with Canadian authorities to ensure that justice is served,” the diplomat said.

Austria met last week with key provincial and municipal officials, representatives of the Vancouver Police Department and members of the Filipino community.

Separately, the embassy warned the public against individuals or groups falsely claiming to be victims or soliciting donations.

“Please ensure that any donations or assistance are directed only through verified organizations or individuals,” it said. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
