BI intensifies measures vs human trafficking

The Bureau of Immigration said Friday that it is intensifying its efforts to combat human trafficking, warning the public against the rise of deceptive schemes targeting outbound Filipino passengers.

In a press statement, the BI mentioned the wider trend of ''deceptive schemes'' such as the “bitbit” or tag-along tactic where experienced travelers act as couriers ''to smuggle others out under false pretenses.''

Under the leadership of BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado, the agency has reinforced coordination with local law enforcement to prevent trafficking and intercept victims before they can be smuggled through backdoor routes.

“We will focus on modernization through advancements in technology and legal reforms to simplify immigration processes and improve overall efficiency,” Viado said.

So far, the agency has been upgrading screening technologies, streamlining immigration processes, and reinforcing legal frameworks to prevent the proliferation of these schemes.

In February, the BI deported 57 foreigners as part of the government’s intensified crackdown on illegal aliens, many of whom were linked to unauthorized Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) activities.

Another 450 foreigners were arrested in January, according to the agency. — Anna Felica Bajo/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
