DMW spent P5 million for OFW shelters in Taiwan in 2025 —Cacdac

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac on Sunday denied reports claiming the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) spent P557 million for shelters in Taiwan and Hong Kong, saying the figure is incorrect.

Cacdac said that in 2025, “Three hundred distressed OFWs were sheltered in three different shelters run by or supported by the DMW in partnership with faith-based NGOs. Our total costs for these shelters was P5 million in 2025.”

He added that last year, 557 "distressed" OFWs were beneficiaries of financial assistance through the AKSYON Fund (Agarang Kalinga at Saklolo para sa mga OFWs na Nangangailangan), a DMW program tasked to provide immediate legal, financial, and humanitarian aid to OFWs.

Cacdac also said the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Taiwan, through the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), the Philippine government’s representative office in Taiwan, supported various OFW training and civic activities there.

However, he said the DMW will “improve our shelter services in 2026,” adding that the AKSYON Fund began implementation under the Marcos administration. — BM, GMA Integrated News
