No Pinoys affected by strong quake in Alaska —DFA


Philippine foreign officials confirmed on Saturday that no Filipinos were affected by the magnitude-7.0 quake that struck  Alaska's southern Kenai Peninsula.

Quoting acting Department of Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary  Elmer Cato, Luisito Santos reported on Super Radyo dzBB on Saturday morning that there was no reported case of a Filipino being hurt in the quake.

US officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had issued a tsunami warning after the quake.

Cato also advised Filipinos in Anchorage, the epicenter of the quake, to exercise caution. 

Consul General Henry Bensurto in of the San Franciso Philippine Consulate said there are more than 25,000 members of the Filipino Community in Alaska, and that Filipinos make up 52 percent of Alaska’s Asian and Pacific Islander population and represented the largest racial minority in Anchorage.

Bensurto also said that the earthquake struck an area 7.5 miles north of the city at around 8:30 a.m. local time. The tremor caused damage to homes and buildings and other infrastructure.

The Consulate General has advised the Filipino Community to brace for more aftershocks and to stay in safe shelters and avoid unnecessary road travel.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that no destructive tsunami threat to the Philippines from the Alaska quake. —LBG, GMA News
