DFA urges Pinoys in Hong Kong to avoid protest areas after clashes

The Department of Foreign Affairs strongly advises Filipinos in Hong Kong, or those traveling to the territory to avoid areas where mass protests and actions are being held, considering recent localized confrontations.

Filipinos were also advised to "put their safety first" and "take all necessary precautions."

DFA's advisory came on Tuesday after renewed clashes broke out between pro-democracy protesters and the Hong Kong police earlier this week.

Also, the department urged the public to "monitor the pronouncements of the Hong Kong government and to heed the advice and instructions of local authorities."

Moreover, the DFA encouraged the public to monitor developments and to "rely on legitimate media entities and news sources," and to "be discerning with respect to information obtained through social media."

Meanwhile, those in need for immediate assistance are advised to call the Consulate General at (+852) 9155-4023 (Consular Assistance), (+852) 6165-2406 (Philippine Overseas Labor Office) or (+852) 6345-9324 (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration). 

It noted that the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong "maintains open communication lines with the HK government regarding the situation," and "will provide the corresponding notification to the public, as necessary."   —Margaret Claire Layug/LBG, GMA News
