Hong Kong raises salary rate of foreign service workers

Despite the long-running protest actions that rock Hong Kong for several weeks, many Filipinos still want to work as household service workers in the former British colony .

Starting September 28 this year, the Hong Kong government has raised the salary and food allowance of foreign domestic workers.

The total pay and food allowance hike is equivalent to more than P700 monthly, a report on Unang Balita said.

An OFW was quoted in the report as saying that while she was not lucky enough with her previous employer, she would still be willing to work in Hong Kong because salary rates and other perks for household service workers in the territory is comparably better than those offered by other host countries she had been to.

For work contracts signed starting September 28, 2019, the minimum salary is at 4,630 Hong Kong dollars or P30,095 (up by more than P700) ; and the monthly food allowance now at 1,121 HK dollars or nearly P7,300 (up by over P300).

But some OFWs in the territory are not contented with the "meager" pay hike, and want the minimum wage to be at 5,894 HK dollars or roughly P38,000. —LBG, GMA News
