3 Asian Americans including 2 Pinoys suffer unprovoked attack in New York

NEW YORK - Three Filipinos became victims of unprovoked attack in New York this month.

One of the victims, a 67-year-old Filipino woman, was brought to a hospital in New York after being mauled by a 42-year-old suspect later identified as Tammel Esco.

In a video shared by the Yonkers Police Department, the suspect could be seen punching the victim 125 times and kicking her seven times.

The victim sustained facial bone fractures, brain bleeding, and multiple contusions in the head.

According to the Yonkers Police, the victim was on her way home when the suspect yelled racial slurs at her. The victim did not respond.

However, the victim did not notice that the suspect followed her into her apartment building where he attacked her.

In the video, the suspect was also seen spitting on the victim who was by then lying bloodied on the floor. The suspect then fled.

Responding police were able to arrest the suspect not far from the area where the attack occurred.

The suspect will face charges of attempted murder and hate crime. He is currently detained at the Westchester County Jail.

Philippine Consul General in New York Elmer Cato denounced the attack, describing it as an unspeakable act to an elderly member of the Filipino community.

"We are outraged by this unspeakable act committed against an elderly member of the Filipino Community. This is the third incident in less than a week where elderly kababayan have become victims of random violence," he said in a Twitter post.

Train attack

Before this incident, two Filipinos were also victimized by unprovoked attack in two separate incidents in train stations in New York.

In a public advisory issued on March 12, the Philippine Consulate in New York said the victims were aged 50 and 67 years old.

The two victims were reportedly pushed by suspects in two train stations in Queens.

"The latest incident involved a kababayan in her late 50s who struck her head after she was shoved by an unidentified man while going down the stairs at the 179th Street station of the F train in Jamaica on Thursday. The incident came hours after a 65-year-old kababayan sustained injuries after she was pushed down by an unidentified man at the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train platform also in Jamaica," the Consulate said.

The Philippine Consulate reminded Filipinos to "always be vigilant and to take the necessary precautions, especially when taking the subway or when outside their residences."

It urged them to immediately report attacks to the Philippine Consulate national hotline at (917) 239-4119. —KG/AOL, GMA News
