67-year-old Pinay hit over 100 times in alleged hate crime in New York

A 67-year-old Filipina was hit more than 100 times in an alleged hate crime in New York City, according to Jun Veneracion’s “24 Oras” report on Tuesday.

The elderly suffered fractures and wounds in the head and face from at least 125 punches and seven strong kicks from 42-year-old suspect identified as Tammel Esco.

The Filipina also suffered bleeding in her brain and is now recovering in the hospital.

“I was really shocked, ‘no at horrified with this latest incident,” Philippine Consulate in New York Consul General Elmer Cato said.

The attacker will face charges for attempted murder due to hate crime. He has been arrested 14 times and convicted multiple times.

The elderly was the third Filipino abused due to anti-Asian hate crime in New York in a span of one week, the Philippine Consulate in New York Consul said.

“Feeling ng community kasi, takot na takot ‘yung ating mga kababayan lalong-lalo na ‘yung matatanda, ayaw na nilang mag-subway. So, they’re afraid to go out of their houses,” Cato said.

Cato reminded the Filipinos in New York to remain vigilant and take extra precautions especially in public spaces.

“We call on authorities to do more to protect the vulnerable. We remind kababayan to be extra vigilant and to take the necessary precautions, especially in public,” he said.

“Yung problema, ‘no, ‘yung karamihan sa ating mga kababayan are reluctant to report these incidents. So, ‘yung 23 cases plus ‘yung three ngayong taon na ito, we think this is just the tip of the iceberg,” he added.—Richa Noriega/LDF, GMA News
