Filipina and Ukrainian husband arrive safely in Philippines


A Filipina and her Ukrainian husband arrived safely in Manila on Friday night after fleeing war-torn Ukraine, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.

The couple who are from Odessa were able to reach Moldova through the assistance of the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Chisinau, the DFA said.

They were also assisted by the Philippine Embassy in Budapest in their travel to Manila.

A total of 370 Filipinos have left Ukraine after tensions arose between that country and Russia.

Of this number, 329 have already arrived in the Philippines.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Russia on Saturday for comprehensive peace talks, according to a report by Reuters.

At least 847 civilians have died and 1,399 have been injured in Ukraine as of March 18 due to the conflict, the United Nations human rights office said on Saturday. —KG, GMA News
