No Pinoy hurt in shooting at supermarket in Buffalo, New York —Philippine Consulate

NEW YORK - No Filipino was among the casualties in a shooting at a supermarket on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo, New York on Saturday (New York time), the Philippine Consulate General said.

“Initial reports received by Philippine Consulate General in New York indicate no Filipino casualties in mass shooting incident in Buffalo New York that left 10 people dead," Consul General Elmer Cato said.

"There are more than 540 Filipinos in Buffalo," he added.

Ten people died and three others were wounded when an 18-year-old gunman fired shots at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, according to a report by Reuters.

The incident occurred at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Buffalo Police Department Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia.

The suspect has surrendered to the police.

Police said they will investigate the incident as a hate crime and an act of "racially motivated violent extremism."

Witnesses said the suspect entered the store wearing military-type gear and body armor and carrying a rifle.

Four of the fatalities were employees of the supermarket, including a security guard who was a retired cop. The guard reportedly exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive (ATF) are also involved in the investigation to determine where the suspect got his weapon and whether he acted alone or not. —KG, GMA News
