Pinoy team places third in int’l math tilt in Vegas

A group of young students from the Philippines won third place at the recent International Regions Mathematics League (IRML) competition held at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.

High school math wizards from various schools around the Philippines clinched third place, ranking only below Team Macau (second place) and China (first place).

Students competed in the team round, power round, individual round, and relay round. Points from each category were summed up to determine the team's overall score.

"Unlike other math competitions, IRML emphasizes teamwork among participants aside from testing their individual mathematical prowess," team sponsor Asian MathSci League, Inc. (AMSLI) said.

Aside from the competition, students were also given the opportunity to visit Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and Sta. Clara University, as well as Griffith Observatory and Lawrence Hall of Science.

They also attended Math lectures by UC Berkeley math professors Kelly Talaska and Zvezdelina Stankova.

Six students were awarded Gold Medals for being top scorers in the Individual Round, namely:
