Pinoy students rake in medals in Singapore math tilt

Some 116 Filipino students from all over the Philippines took home 126 medals from the 4th Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), held last July 7 at the Canadian International School Lakeside Campus in Singapore.

The Asian MathSci League Inc. (AMSLI) Philippine Team struck gold in all three categories — 11 for the individual written Math Olympiad for grades 2 to 11, one for the team-based Math Warriors challenge, and two for the similarly team-based Mind Sports Challenge.

Students also received 43 silver medals and 69 bronze medals for all categories, with some earning multiple medals across different categories.

Philippine Ambassador to Singapore  Joseph Del Mar Yap was present to witness the students receive the awards at the National University of Singapore University Cultural Centre (UCC) Theatre.

SIMOC tests students' abilities through pen-and-paper math problems, team problems, and interactive math games and puzzles.

Filipinos competed in the games with 16 other countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Cambodia, India, Uzbekistan, Bulgaria, Myanmar, China, Mongolia, Laos, Brunei, and Russia. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
