This Sunday on 'Born Impact:' Roar with the big cats

This Sunday, Born Impact roars with the world’s BIG CATS.
Big cats refer to larger cat species that can be found in the wild such as the lion, puma, tiger and others.
Big cats are not naturally found in the Philippines. We only have two wild cat species, the Palawan and Visayas Leopard Cat. But some of the big cats get here because of the pet trade. Big cats are hot items as pets because they are regarded as symbol of power and wealth.
In Laguna, Doc Nielsen treats a male puma that was turned-over by an owner who cannot take care of it anymore. The puma suffers from a swollen testicle because of being unable to mate with a partner. Mating is a natural behavior of pumas in the wild.

Meanwhile in Cebu , Doc Ferds encounters a Bengal tiger, turned over as well in a wildlife park. Doc Ferds and a team of veterinarians need to do a check-up because the tiger has damaged hind limbs, making movement difficult for the big cat.

In spite of their ferocious nature, big cats have dramatically dwindled in number throughout the years because they are being poached for the illegal pet trade. Their skins and other body parts are also sought after as fashion items, decorative pieces and for alternative medicine.
Doc Ferds says, ”The best way to conserve wild cats is to keep them wild, at huwag ding tangkilikin yung mga fur nila na ibinebenta bilang damit o carpet.”
