Giant bats and new species of sea slugs on 'Born to be Wild'

Airing date: September 20, 2015, 9 AM on GMA Network

In Surigao del Sur, Doc Nielsen Donato meets kite-flyers who gather at night.  Their kites are meant to hunt bats called giant flying foxes for food.  Locally known as kabog, these bats serve as a protein source for the community.

Experts warn that eating bats is unadvisable because they may carry viruses that can be transferred to humans. And while this proximity to bats and the use of their species as local food poses threats to humans, excessive harvesting also threatens the bat population which serves to pollinate forests.  Doc Nielsen further investigates and encounters a giant bat in need of treatment.

There are divers who call Anilao “the nudibranch capital of the world." New species of nudibranchs or sea slugs are discovered in this part of the world almost every year.

Guest host Mariz Umali dives and discovers the beauty of these little sea creatures.  Nudibranchs are not only food for sea turtles but they are also predators of sponges and corals and help maintain the ecological balance underwater.
