Mud lobsters on ‘Born to be Wild’

BORN TO BE WILD
July 28, 2019

In Polillo, Quezon, there is a scorpion-like creature that thrives in the mangroves. But while their bodies may look like scorpions, they’re actually what locals call bulaso or mud lobsters. The bulaso can live in the mud and underwater. They may be popular among the residents as food but they have a big role in the ecosystem. Get to know them in this story by Doc Ferds.

In Camarines Sur, Doc Nielsen discovers that many rice fields are invaded by the kiwet or rice swamp eels. These eels are known to destroy the irrigation systems of rice fields, as they burrow themselves underneath the soil. But residents have found out that they can turn these pests into a harvest. Today, the kiwet is exported as a delicacy.
