Documenting the ‘motherly instincts’ of spiders

BORN TO BE WILD
February 9, 2020
Some creatures live on land while others prefer to hide under the soil or inside rock crevices. Peek inside the daily life of burrower species and how they survive by hiding in the dark. The Born team documents how one burrower in particular—the millipede—escapes its predator. And find out more about the "antingaw" of Bohol, a shipworm that can bore itself inside rocks. Even with its soft body, it has strong teeth that can bite through hard objects and surfaces.

Spiders may not be everyone’s favorite creatures, but did you know that even spiders have "motherly instincts"? Doc Ferds observes how a spider builds a web to protect its eggs inside a cave in Rizal. He also witnesses how a spider wraps its prey with its web!

In Mindanao, Doc Nielsen checks on a croc in a rescue center. “Crocky” was caught in Liguasan Marsh in 1990. Ever since, Crocky has not been checked by a veterinarian. Croc expert Rainier Manalo observes that Crocky is too small for a saltwater crocodile. Could he be a mix between the smaller freshwater crocodile and the bigger saltwater croc? Crocky undergoes a DNA test.
