Sine Totoo presents Howie Severino's "Unggoy"

Episode on May 3, 2008 Saturday, 11:15 p.m. This Saturday, Sine Totoo airs one of the first documentaries on Philippine television to feature intimate video of animals in the wild. In a lush part of Mount Apo, Howie Severino and his team meet a band of mischievous monkeys. They have lived harmoniously for the past 60 years alongside a strict religious group that grows flowers. Unthreatened by humans, the long-tailed macaques allow the I-Witness team to shadow them at close range for days. The monkeys forage for food, care for their young, fight for supremacy - and even make love. From their habits and social behavior, it becomes easy to imagine that people did originate from primates. While filming the documentary, the I-Witness team discovers how monkeys sometimes manage to outsmart men. In one instance, Howie finds himself and his equipment the victim of a hilarious macaque antic. This comfort zone between animals and people would not be possible without the unique attitude of the religious community called Moncadistas. To them, humans may not only have come from monkeys but may be reincarnated upon death into the playful creatures in their midst. Instead of being treated as pests, the macaques are fed and tolerated by the Moncadistas - in spite of the occasional monkey business of ransacking their food and laundry. In a special feature before the documentary, Howie Severino -- also Sine Totoo's host -- explains the key challenges his team encountered shooting the macaques in the wild. “Unggoy" was awarded a Certificate for Creative Excellence at the 2006 US International Film and Video Festival.

Ngayong Sabado ng gabi, mapapanood sa Sine Totoo ang isa sa pinakaunang dokumentaryong ipinalabas sa Pilipinas na nagpakita ng malapitang obserbasyon sa mga ligaw na hayop. Sa isang masukal na bahagi ng Mount Apo, nakasalamuha ni Howie Severino ang isang grupo ng mga unggoy na mahigit animnapung taon nang namumuhay nang panatag katabi ng isang relihiyosong grupo. Walang takot sa mga tao ang mga unggoy at malaya silang nasundan ng I-Witness. Macaque ang tawag sa klase ng mga unggoy -- makukulit, malalaki ang mga katawan at mahahaba ang mga buntot. Nakuhanan sila sa paghahanap ng pagkain, pag-aaruga sa mga anak, pakikipaglaban sa ibang grupo ng unggoy at maging sa kanilang pakikipagtalik. Sa ugali at kilos nila, hindi mahirap isipin na ang mga tao’y nagmula rin sa unggoy. Habang ginagawa nga ang dokumentaryo, ipinamalas ng mga unggoy ang kanilang kakaibang talino. Maski si Howie Severino ay naisahan nila. Masayang nakikipamuhay ang mga macaque sa mga Moncadista, isang relihiyosong grupo. Imbes na tratuhing mga peste, hinahayaan lang ng mga Moncadista ang mga macaque na gumala sa kanilang lugar. Pinapakain pa nila ito kahit paminsan-minsa'y ginugulo ng mga unggoy ang kanilang mga bahay at sinisira ang kanilang mga pananim.
