I-LISTEN: THE INSPIRING JOURNEY OF PWD TEACHER CARLA DELA CRUZ
Episode dropping this December 3, 5PM on GMA Public Affairs YouTube Channel, Spotify and Apple Podcasts
Our latest podcast episode highlights the remarkable story of Carla Dela Cruz, a public school SPED teacher who has turned adversity into achievement. Born with Spina Bifida Occulta, Carla grew up in Catanduanes without a wheelchair, often crawling to school just to pursue her education.

Despite the hardships, she excelled and remained an honor student.
At 13, she moved to Manila to study at the National Orthopedic Hospital – School for Crippled Children, where she learned to live independently and received her first wheelchair. Her determination later earned her a scholarship through the Kennedy-Lugar YES Program in the US, where she finally received a proper diagnosis and improved mobility support. With guidance from a mentor at the Peace Corps Alumni Foundation for Philippine Development, she pursued college and shifted to Special Education—a course that resonated with her purpose.

After graduating with honors and passing the board exam, Carla began teaching at Commonwealth Elementary School, where she continues to inspire learners and parents alike. Carla’s story is a powerful reminder that no disability can limit the drive to learn, achieve, and uplift others.
